Learned how to do this, and it looks great, but it's a headache.

When you use the Lyric tool, a set of four arrows appears to the left of the template, and all four will be pointed beneath the staff you're using, as if applying a single later of lyrics to a single-line melody.

Trick is, those four arrows can actually be separated by dragging, allowing for up to four layers of lyrics each.

If you're layering lyrics (like special words for a tenor rhythm), first make sure you're following the layer containing the tenor part. Drag one of the four arrows (I've played with all of them, and gotten them to work okay--there's probably a system to it) to move the baseline for the lyrics you want to place. For a tenor line of lyrics, drag the arrow up ABOVE the tenor line. Then click the first note that contains the special rhythm, and start applying lyrics.

I've only done this once or twice, so I still need to experiment with it. If you find a system that works, let me know.
